/ Population Studies

Before instituting a successful fish stocking program in an established fishery, you must first analyze the aquatic environment. Jones Fish and Lake Management has the expertise to quantify existing fish populations in lakes and ponds using a unique method called electrofishing. Electrofishing utilizes a pulsating DC current within the water column to stun the fish. Once stunned, the fish are captured and then counted, weighed and aged. This data is then analyzed using standardized analysis techniques, allowing us to draw conclusions about your fish population.

Jones Fish and Lake Management maintains an up to date technical reference library, allowing us to utilize the most up to date methods and scientific analysis techniques. In addition to electrofishing, Jones Fish and Lake Management utilizes equipment for testing the water quality and laboratory equipment necessary for analyzing all relevant data. If you are interested in electrofishing your lake or pond, call us today for an estimate or to arrange an appointment.

A population study will provide us with the data to:

• Identify the fish species present, the relative abundance of each fish species, the growth rates of the species and the general health of the species present and the fish population as a whole.

• Determine whether there are any harmful diseases present.

• Identify an overpopulation or underpopulation of various species within the fish community.

• Analyze the lake ecology as a whole and any problems that are not yet evident. From this information we will develop a custom fish stocking and management program, providing you with the following benefits:

• An increase in the size of fish, the numbers of fish and in the overall productivity of your lake.

• The proper management of undesirable fish species within your lake.

• An increase in the growth rates of desirable fish species within your lake.

• The prevention of costly fish kills.

• And finally, the long term management of fish populations within your lake for continued fishing pleasure.
