Labeled as “sodium bentonite,” this granular clay compound has proven useful in reducing water loss from ponds through seepage and holes. Bentonite can stop small leaks and plug small holes in dikes, dams, and around drain-pipe/culvert areas. Application is performed by spreading a liberal amount of bentonite over the bottom or shoreline, where seepage and leakage is suspected, to a layer greater than 1/2 inch thick.
This product sinks quickly and will expand as it absorbs water to fill in small holes. It may take several minutes to achieve full effectiveness and sealing activity. Bentonite clay may not be a permanent solution, but can pro-vide short-term control of water loss.
