The mosquito fish is native to most of the Ohio River drainage basin and along the entire east coast. From New Jersey to Texas, the mosquito fish is found in shallow pools, drainage ditches, retention ponds and slow moving streams. This extremely versatile fish has been stocked world wide in an attempt to control mosquito larvae populations, especially where malaria, yellow fever and the West Nile virus is found. This winter hardy fish bears live young during the summer months. It reproduces every three to four weeks, depending on temperatures. Mosquito fish are sexually mature at 0.5–1 inches and typically will not exceed 2 inches in length, with females being twice the size of the males. The mosquito fish can eat its weight in mosquito larvae every day.
