The smallmouth bass is one of the most valued and prized gamefish in North America. This member of the black bass family inhabits rocky streams and clear, deep lakes. The smallmouth bass tolerates a wide variety of tempera-tures, however they prefer a mid-summer water temperature below 80 degrees.
Juvenile smallmouth bass consume a variety of foods. Starting with aquatic insects, as the smallmouth matures it eventually eats amphibians, minnows, and crayfish. The best smallmouth fishing is early morning or late afternoon when the bass venture into shallower water in an attempt to eat minnows and small frogs.Spawning usually occurs when the water temperature is near 55 degrees. A nest is excavated from gravel or coarse sand by the male in shallow water. After spawning is complete, the male will often drive the female away in an attempt to select another egg-ladened female to reuse the nest for spawning. When the eggs hatch three to ten days later, there is little to no parental care.
