This beautiful, elegant fish originates from Japan. It was created sometime during the mid-twentieth century by crossing wild, long finned Indonesian carp (Puntius gonionotus) with Japanese koi to produce a hardy new variant. As with Japanese koi, these fish exhibit a wide array of color differences and variations ranging from white, yellow, red and black to fish with a combination of these colors. As the name suggests, Butterfly Koi have long, flowing fins resembling the clean lines of butterfly wings.
This species has the potential to grow to an amazing three feet long. For this reason, ponds of less than two and a half feet of depth and 1,000 gallons do not best suit butterfly koi.
