BioHaven Floating Islands are floating wetlands that remove pollutants including nitrates, phosphates, ammonia and heavy metals from various waterways. Floating islands will also reduce wave action and enhance erosion control. In addition to the water quality benefits, floating islands add to the aesthetics of any waterscape, whether it be a manmade pond, natural lake or garden pond.
BioHaven floating islands are comprised of a recycled plastic “matrix” that is layered together and then bonded with adhesive foam. The floating islands are then planted with sod, garden plants or wetland plants and launched onto the desired waterbody. As the plants grow and develop, their roots grow through the islands and into the water below. Furthermore, these floating islands can be configured together in the formation of walkways, piers or docks; and they can provide support for picnic tables and gazebos. Similarly, the floating islands provide habitat for many invertebrates, fish and terrestrial animals. For fish, the floating islands lend themselves to spawning, feeding and shelter from predators.
There is a floating island designed to meet almost every need. However, for the homeowner wishing to create larger islands, smaller islands can be hooked together via the island attachment system (sold seperately). Furthermore, the larger islands can support up to two pounds of additional negative buoyancy per square foot, meaning a 500 square foot floating island can support up to 1000 pounds, allowing the homeowner the option of placing rocks, picnic tables and other objects on the island.
Plant Packages
Jones Fish and Lake Management has taken the hassle out of selecting plants for your BioHaven Floating Island. Our convenient plant packages are a mix of hardy and non invasive varieties that will thrive in the shallow water habitat that the BioHaven Floating Islands provide. Plant packages are harvested and shipped every 10-14 days, April 1st through October 15th. At certain times of the year plant quantities may be limited; substitutions may be made unless otherwise requested. If you feel that you need additional plants, please feel free to select more than one plant package.
